Projects / Nuclear power construction
Wireless gas detection on a nuclear project site
Wireless fixed detectors deployed where cable routing was not possible during construction of a nuclear project.
The setting
Construction areas on a nuclear site change weekly. Detection points that would normally be cabled in have to move with the work front, and pulling permanent cable to a temporary location is not practical.
Why it is difficult
Temporary cable runs in a classified and access-controlled area carry their own approval burden, and a detector that cannot be relocated is a detector that gets bypassed.
What was deployed
Wireless fixed detectors with local alarm and a gateway back to the site monitoring station, positioned to follow the active work front rather than fixed to a plant layout.
Outcome
Detection coverage moved with the construction sequence instead of lagging behind it. Radio range and battery endurance figures to be supplied by the factory.
